When your dentist refers you to a specialist, does the referring dentist receive a fee from the specialist? And should your dentist disclose that to you?
Hi Melvin, I have never known of specialists who pay for referrals but that doesn't mean the practice doesn't exist.
Ideally you should only be refered for your benefit not the referring dentist's. Getting paid for referrals creates a conflict of interest for the referring dentist and is unethical in my opinion. My guess is if a dentist gets paid for a referral they are not likely to disclose it.
When in doubt a second opinion is a good idea.
