Home remedies for dry mouth save money, improve your health and make this condition more tolerable.
This is the latest addition to my list of home remedies. I recently learned of a dentist who recommends oil pulling; swishing with coconut oil for 20 minutes to improve dry mouth among other things.
It sounded pretty awful at first but when I read the list of possible health benefits, I just had to try it.
After the first big gulp, it actually wasn't too bad at all.
I recommend using a teaspoon vs a tablespoon because it is easier to manage for 10-20 minutes also when you are finished, spit the oil into a plastic bag and not down your sink drain. Coconut oil will return to solid form at room temperature and could clog your drain.
Dry mouth can be so uncomfortable not to mention unhealthy for your teeth and gums that I would definitely give oil pulling a try.
Besides being an ideal edible moisturizer, coconut oil has many health benefits. Learn more about the ancient practice of oil pulling and its health benefits here.
Apply vaseline to your gums. If you breath through your mouth, a thin layer of vaseline applied at bedtime prevent fragile gum tissues from drying out.
Mouth breathers tend to have very inflamed gums especially around their front teeth. These red and sore gums are difficult to brush and floss because they hurt and bleed. This simple remedy will begin the healing process and make brushing and flossing more comfortable.
Use a humidifier. This is especially important if you are a mouth breather at night.
If you have a dry mouth, sipping water will not only relieve dry oral tissues but may lead to increased saliva production.
These simple remedies have one thing in common, they add moisture in one way or another. They provide relief for dry mouth.
If you suffer from dry mouth it is important to consider what is causing your problem. Some causes of dry mouth can't be corrected. Medications are a major cause of dry mouth and many times can't be altered but other causes can be addressed.
