Why do I have a Swollen Spot on My Gums?

A swollen spot on his gums is causing some concern for Chris.  But not enough to overcome his fear of dentists.

Chris' question

I have a spot on my gum in front left side between the 2nd and 3rd tooth that is swollen and now causing my tooth to move.

Sadly this has been going on for about 2 years, it hasn't been painful except when I try to floss vigoursly to remove what I believe caused the problem.

I didnt go to any dentist because well, no excuses, I fear Dentist (no offense..lol).

One day I had a piece of a fish bone jam into my gum by the tooth, I removed what I thought was all of the bone but the swelling does not recede.

Most likely there is still a piece of it in there.   Flossing does not produce any evidence of anything.

The gum is not discolored in anyway (pink), but has a very solid lump about the size of a raisin.

I will be visiting a dentist when my new insurance kicks in, but to maybe prepare me for what it could be, what are your thoughts and where should I look to compare my issue with pictures to maybe come up with the dental term.

Thank you for any help.

My reply

Hi Chris,  My advice is to have anything that looks unusual and doesn't go away in a week or two evaluated by a dentist.   It's great that you will be seeing a dentist soon.

The fact that the swollen area is making your tooth move is further reason for concern.

Don't feel bad, you are not the only one who doesn't like dentists. However by going to a dentist you will save yourself a lot of time and worry:)

Won't it be nice to finally know what the problem is and then get it taken care of?  You have put up with this problem for too long.

If you need some inspiration, here is a link to my dental fear forum. You will find stories from others who don't like dentists and tips for overcoming dental fear.

The internet is a great resource but can never replace a real live dentist.
